Description
Detect and isolate Listeria monocytogenes from food samples with ready-to-use Thermo Scientific™ Oxoid™ PALCAM Medium. The PALCAM Medium base is highly selective and contains a double indicator system that allows easy differentiation of Listeria monocytogenes, based upon aesculin fermentation, lack of mannitol fermentation and resultant pH change. The presence of egg yolk aids the recovery of damaged cells for presumptive identification of L. monocytogenes1.
Use PALCAM Medium for selective isolation and easy differentiation of L. monocytogenes.
- Selective: The addition of lithium chloride, ceftazidime, polymyxin B and acriflavine hydrochloride make the medium highly selective for Listeria monocytogenes.
- Easy to read: L. monocytogenes forms brown/black colonies with a black halo while mannitol positive accompanying flora, such as staphylococci and enterococci, grow as yellow colonies.
- Ready-to-use convenience of prepared media.
PALCAM Medium allows easy differential diagnosis of L. monocytogenes by utilising the double indicator system.

L.monocytogenes hydrolyses aesculin resulting in the formation of a black halo around colonies. L. monocytogenes does not ferment mannitol so can be easily differentiated from contaminants, such as enterococci and staphylococci, which ferment mannitolproducing a change from red to yellow in the pH indicator phenol red.
