Detect and identify ESBL- and CRE-producing bacteria in clinical samples accurately, easily and quickly with this chromogenic, bi-plate combination.

Detect CRE-and ESBL-colonized patients accurately, easily and quickly with Thermo Scientific™ Brilliance™ ESBL Agar/ Brilliance™ CRE Agar chromogenic bi-plates. Screen clinical samples simultaneously for both extended spectrum β-lactamase- (ESBL) producing organisms and carbapenem-resistant Enterobacteriaceae (CRE) on a single plate for more timely and targeted treatment of patients.

Screen clinical samples faster with Brilliance ESBL Agar/ Brilliance CRE Agar bi-plates which combine two easy-to-read, chromogenic selective media. The bi-plate combination allows the easy identification of clinically relevant ESBL-producing organisms and CRE.

  • Easily and clearly differentiate E.coli and the Klebsiella, Enterobacter, Serratia and Citrobacter (KESC) group by different colors
  • Reduce false positives and the need for confirmatory tests through inhibition of AmpC producers
  • Achieve results in just 18 hours for carbapenem-resistant Enterobacteriaceae (CRE)

Brilliance ESBL Agar contains cefpodoxime, in combination with additional antibacterial agents, to inhibit non-ESBL Enterobacteriaceae and to suppress the growth of most AmpC organisms and other non-ESBL flora.

Differentiation of the most prevalent ESBL-producing organisms is achieved through the inclusion of two chromogens that specifically target two enzymes. Members of the KESC group express galactosidase, resulting in green colonies. E. coli, however, express galactosidase and glucuronidase which, depending on the activity of the respective enzymes, will appear as blue colonies. Galactosidase negative E. coli (less than 5%) will appear pink. Proteus, Morganella and Providencia do not utilise either chromogen but are able to deaminate tryptohan, resulting in tan-coloured colonies with a brown halo. Colorless colonies refer to Salmonella, Acinetobacter or other bacteria with other resistance mechanisms which may grow on this medium. Any such isolate may be clinically significant and should be investigated further.

Brilliance CRE Agar contains a modified carbapenem, at a level recommended by both EUCAST and CLSI, ensuring reliable results with a wide variety of CRE, including those with the New Delhi Metallo-β-lactamase-1 (NDM-1) mechanism. The two-chromogen system differentiates E. coli (pink) from the KESC group, which grow blue. The novel background makes the white or naturally pigmented colonies of non-CRE organisms, such as Acinetobacter, easy-to-spot, and results are available in just 18 hours.
