Description
PDEF (prostate-derived Ets factor) is a 37.5- kDa protein that acts as an androgen-independent transcriptional activator for the PSA (prostate specific antigen) promoter. It also interacts directly with the DNA binding domain of androgen receptor and enhances androgen-mediated activation of the PSA promoter. PDEF was shown to have transcript levels 192-fold higher in the peripheral blood of some breast cancer patients in comparison with normal individuals. PDEF mRNA is also frequently over-expressed in human breast tumors as well as in human ovarian tumors. In ovarian tumors, PDEF expression seems to down-modulate maligt potential, and thus provides a rationale to screen for drugs that induce PDEF expression in epithelial ovarian tumors.
