Description
The SOX gene family is defined by the Sry-related HMG box domain that mediates sequence-specific DNA binding. A variety of functions are associated with the SOX proteins during development. The highly complex group of Sox genes cluster at least 40 different loci that rapidly diverged in various animal lineages. At present, 30 Sox genes have been identified. Members of this family have been shown to be conserved during evolution and to play key roles during animal development. SOX21 may play a role as an activator of transcription of OPRM1. Overexpression of SOX21 can cause an up-regulation of the OPRM1 distal promoter in mor-expressing neuronal cells.Specifications
