It is used as a laboratory reagent and pH indicator. Phenolphthalein is a common indicator to use in neutralization titrations. Phenolphthalein exerts laxative effects by stimulating the intestinal mucosa and constricting smooth muscles. It is used medicinally as a cathartic.
