Cleaves lactose into its monosaccharide components, glucose and galactose

  • Hydrolyzes Lactose (4-o-β-D-Galactopyranosyl-D-glucose) and produces β-D-Galactose and α-D-Glucose
  • Catalyses transglycosylation of glucose into allolactose, the inducer of β-galactosidase
