The histone core is an integral component of chromatin structure, consisting of an octamer of core histones: H2A, H2B, H3, and H4. Each nucleosome unit contains two copies of each of these histones, forming a structural foundation around which approximately 147 base pairs of DNA are wrapped. The histone octamer is organized with an (H3-H4)2 tetramer at its core, flanked by two H2A-H2B dimers. This highly conserved structure not only facilitates DNA compaction but also plays a critical role in regulating gene expression through various post-translational modifications, such as acetylation, methylation, and phosphorylation. These modifications can alter chromatin dynamics and accessibility, impacting processes such as transcription, replication, and DNA repair. The presence of specific histone variants further adds to the epigenetic complexity and regulation of the genome.
