It acts as intermediate in the synthesis of vitamin B1, vitamin B6, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory agents agrochemicals and perfumes. In Knoevenagel condensation reaction, it reacts with benzaldehyde to get diethyl benzylidenemalonate.
