Description
Catalase is a 527 amino acid heme-containing peroxisomal enzyme belonging to the catalase family. It is a common enzyme that occurs in almost all aerobically respiring organisms and activates the decomposition of hydrogen peroxide, thus serving an important role in protecting cells from the toxic effects of hydrogen peroxide. Catalase, a homotetramer, is associated with cofactors like heme group and NADP and is known to have one of the highest turnover rates of all enzymes. Catalase is a natural antioxidant used to study roles of reactive oxygen species in gene expression and apoptosis. Defects in Catalase lead to a dreadful disease acatalasia, also known as acatalasemia, characterized by the absence of catalase activity in red cells and are often associated with ulcerating oral lesions. Catalase is also known to play an important role in ethanol metabolism, inflammation, apoptosis, aging and cancer.
