Cryogenic boxes (cryoboxes), and freezer boxes are used to store materials in ultra-low temperatures down to -80 °C (-112°F) or cryogenic freezers and systems.

They are available in various sizes and colours and generally made from resistant plastic such as polycarbonate or polypropylene, and water repellent fibreboard (cardboard). An alternative to boxes includes aluminium storage canes and cell freezing containers for controlled freezing of cell samples.

What cryo-storage box should I use?

• Fibreboard, or cardboard, freezer boxes have a water repellant coating and are ideal for use at ultra-low temperatures.
• Plastic cryogenic storage boxes can be used in ULT or cryogenic freezers. They can be configured with clear covers for easy sample identification and are ideal for sample transportation. Easy to assemble flat pack freezer boxes are also available to reduce the storage space required. They can be all be fitted with grid insert dividers that are designed to fit a wide range of tube sizes.
• Storage canes are used to store various cryotubes and vials in cryogenic freezer systems and dewars. Available in standard or stepped format, they accommodate a variety of vial sizes and designs.
• Cell freezing containers are radially symmetrical for uniform vial freezing. They are made from non-absorbent foam and feature a bevelled lid for a secure grip and easy opening.
