These stains are intense, highly photostable and match the output wavelengths of common fluorescence instrumentation. Effective image analysis in cell-based assays and fluorescence microscopy of the localization of specific targets requires fluorescent labeling of the entire cells, nuclei or major cellular components. Whole cell stains identify cell numbers, cell borders and cell morphologies as useful primary objects for assessment of specific protein targets and their redistribution in response to treatment conditions.
