Description

Description

Cluster of Differentiation 44 (CD44) recombinant human protein is supplied as a lyophilized powder. This protein is suitable for use in analysis of protein structure. In general, recombinant proteins can also be used as an immunogen, as a protein standard, or in cell biology research applications.&line-break;Background: CD44, short for Cluster of Differentiation 44, is an adhesion molecule of the hyaluronate receptor family. The adhesive function of CD44, like other molecules involved in inducible adhesion, is tightly regulated. Posttranslational modifications, isoform expression, aggregation state, and protein associations all can affect the ligand binding properties of CD44, and these can vary depending on the cell type and the activation state of the cell. The principal ligand of CD44 is hyaluronan, and CD44 is involved in the metabolism of this compound. Furthermore, an increasing quantity of evidence suggests that CD44 has various functions related to inflammatory disease. CD44 deficiency induces severe liver injury. CD44-hyaluronate mediates in lymphocyte T and monocyte adhesion to the endothelium, stimulates proinflammatory cytokine release from macrophages and participates in dedifferentiation phenotype of smooth muscle cells from contractile state to synthetic one. CD44 acts in atherosclerotic plaque destabilization and neointimal proliferation after percutaneous vascular interventions. CD44 participates in many stages of atherosclerosis. CD44 also is a cell membrane protein often overexpressed on tumor cells and, being both a cell-cell and cell-extracellular matrix adhesion protein, is well positioned to contribute to this process.
