DescriptionInterleukin 6 is a cytokine secreted by T cells and macrophages, has shown to exhibit activity in response to tissue damage and infection. They have also been found to be involved in various other activities like development of blood, cancer, embryonic development, and regulation of the immune system. IL6 is included in a family of other cytokines which include ciliary neurotrophic factor, cardiotrophin-1, leukemia inhibitory factor and interleukin 11. IL-6 can bring about differentiation through a receptor system which requires a specific receptor and a signaling subunit, gp130. Description: Human IL-6 (also known as B Cell Stimulating Factor BCSF, BSF-2) is a ∽21-28kDa factor produced by a variety of cell types including monocytes, fibroblasts and endothelial cells. Upon stimulation, macrophages, T, B, mast, glial cells, eosinophils, keratinocytes and granulocytes also secrete IL-6. This pleiotrophic cytokine influences antigen-specific immune response, inflammatory response, and the development of neurons and is a major mediator of the acute phase reaction. Applications Reported: Recombinant human IL-6 is biologically active and can promote proliferation of human cell line in culture. It is also used as standard in human IL-6 ELISA. Applications Tested: This recombinant human IL-6 has been tested by sandwich ELISA using anti-human IL-6 antibody pair (MQ2-13A5/MQ2-39C3) and in bioassays using human cell line TF-1. The ED50 measured in a TF-1 proliferation assay is typically less than 0.10ng/mL, corresponding to a specific activity of greater than 1x10e7 Units/mg.
